Happy Birthday Jane Yolen!

Jane Yolen turns 72 today.  In her amazing career to date, she has published more than 300 books ranging from popular children's picture books to Young Adult fantasy and science fiction, short stories, poetry, and more.  Her career as a published writer began 50 years ago today.  In that time she has written more than 5000 poems and short stories.

Newsweek called her the "Hans Christian Anderson of America" - some of her series and characters have entered the popular mind of generations so pervasively that they are part of our collective mythology.

In her career to date, Ms. Yolen has won virtually every award in fiction, most of them twice; According to wikipedia and other sources, she has won the Caldecott Medal, two Nebula Awards, two Christopher Medals, theWorld Fantasy Award, three Mythopoeic Awards, both first and second place in the 2007 Dwarf Stars Award, the Golden Kite Award, the Jewish Book Award, the Association of Jewish Libraries Award, and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement.

Here's hoping that list continues to expand though I have little doubt on that matter.  Ms. Yolen's work wins awards and honors faster than she can update her website to list them.  She's already had at least 5 more new works published this year so far and there are many more on tap.

So raise a glass to Jane Yolen today, drop her a birthday wish on her facebook page, or send her a congratulatory email
